I haven't really made much progress with the chairs and the dining room in the past month or so. I've found that cutting CD sleeves and peeling beer and wine labels to glue to the chairs has been monotonous and unappealing. Regardless, I am nearly done with at least one chair and have enough cut outs and labels to finish another.
In the meantime I figured I kept myself entertained with two smaller projects. I want to keep the whole music bar feel to my dining room so I started super-gluing some CDs together. These have become my coasters. Unfortunately I found that the polyurethane I bought does not have the "coating"/protecting effect I wanted. Also, I am still trying to decide weather to fill the hole in the middle or leave it open. Regardless, the coasters look nice as they are.
A while back I purchased two old-fashioned, diner style mustard and ketchup bottles at the dollar store. I thought they would go great with the dining room. Unfortunately they didn't.
So I ran out to Michael's and purchased the cheapest paint I could get my stingy little hands on. At first I wanted some sort of puff/fabric type paint that I could simply squeeze on to the bottles but I wasn't able to find anything that would stick to plastic. I bought a cheap set of acrylic paint and some cheap brushes since I was going to work on $1 bottles.
And with my weapons cocked and loaded I was ready to get to work on the yellow bottle.
Sadly, the cheap plastic did not like the cheap paint well. The paint did not take and the more I brushed the bottle, instead of covering, the more paint that got brushed away.
Finally I just simply stroke the brush up and down (no pun intended) covering most of the bottom of the bottle. I then grabbed a napkin and wiped away the flame shapes. Below is the final product.
I honestly didn't really like the end result as the paint didn't give the bottles the look I was going for. Additionally, once the paint dried it can be easy scratched off from the bottles so I am sure pretty soon I'll end up with a yellow or red stain on my hand.
Later that day, while I was still on a roll, I decided to work on the light switch. Part of the original idea for the color for the dining room was to have all the switch and electrical plates as well as the wall trip painted black. Well, it still is but I've not gotten around to it.
A while back Becky gave me a place protector which I thought to use as it was to protect the wall. Instead, I had the excellent idea of taking the collage mnotif I was using for the chairs on the plate.
I simply took a bunch of the CD sleeve cut outs I've been setting aside from the chairs and some spray adhesive to glue them on to the plate. Mere seconds I finished with my little collage I had the bright idea of covering it with the polyurethane. This was a big mistake. The polyurethane unglued all the cutout and I ended up with a sticky mess. Fortunately I just simply covered it in newspaper and set some weight on it for a while. I then set it outside on the scorching 96 degree sun and an hour later everything was nice and glued together.

Now, if I can get those fuckin' chairs finished I can actually have peeps over to gloat about my dining room! yay!
